Timber Engineering
Located in the natural reserve of Comporta, south of Lisbon (PT), the project consists of two buildings whose structure is composed of frames reaching 9 meters high, with a total width of 18 meters. The two buildings host respectively a SPA and a hotel-restaurant in an idyllic setting.
The structure is made from reclaimed wood from century-old frames from Canada. The timber is not planed or graded, which required the use of old carpentry techniques to define the axes. They are also of various species, such as ash, elm, lime, hemlock and yellow pine. All joints are designed to be invisible, with molded plates and self-drilling dowels. The geometry of the frame was optimized to meet the high wind loads of the seaside as well as the seismic sollicitations that may be experienced in the area.
