Complete mission of stability concerning the construction of 2 school buildings for basic education with 10 classrooms, administrative and technical premises, a sports hall, changing rooms and toilets, … The first building is composed of a R+1 and a courtyard in metallic structure. The second building houses the sports hall on the first floor and two upper floors.
Construction was extremely rapid. With more traditional materials, construction would have required 3 times as many workers to meet the deadline. At Les Prés Verts, the bulk of the project was completed in 6 months.
The school is made entirely of wood with CLT walls and floors. The major challenge of the project was to allow the school to remain in operation on the site throughout the construction period. The use of wood, and particularly CLT, enabled the superstructure of the two buildings to be erected in less than a week, thus limiting the nuisance (noise, truck arrivals, dust, mud, etc.) for the children and teaching staff.
Another advantage of CLT is that it can span long spans. To further increase the span while reducing the thickness of the floor complex, the CLT panels are connected to the glulam beams on which they rest. The result is a ribbed floor configuration.
A technical detail: glulam and CLT do not settle in the same way. To avoid problems, the glulam beams do not rest directly on the notches in the vertical CLT panels.
To optimise acoustics, a resilient membrane was laid between the vertical and horizontal panels to limit noise transmission between floors.
