Forest house Couvin

Belgium

Couvin

Context

The city of Couvin, in order to further boost tourism, has decided to create a forest house that will be a starting point for hikes, a place of education on the themes of the forest and especially a landmark. The building, designed by the architectural firm Hélium 3, is characterized by its organic architecture and takes a form inspired by the tree with a central concrete core and a peripheral wooden structure. Machined logs will be used and will participate in the integration of the building in its environment.

Particularities

The wooden structure is planned in solid wood as much as possible to limit the transformation of wood. The large load-bearing beams are in glued laminated timber. The visible columns are made of raw wood and will be formed by minimalist machining of logs to keep the raw aspect.
The structure of the landscape tower, at the top of the structure, is composed of a reciprocal glulam structure.
