Context

For this apartment in the heart of Brussels, architect Guillaume Sokal has achieved a very interesting architectural feat. The facades of the extension incorporate the codes of existing buildings, modernizing them for an elegant integration into the urban context. If the architecture and design of the place allow for effective adaptation to its environment, the choice of materials and structural operating modes make it possible to create beautiful living spaces while limiting additional loads on the pre-existing underlying structure. Indeed, the structure is composed of wood and articulated in such a way as to only bring forces to bear at the bearing points of the structure of the ground floor +4.

Particularities

The floors are made up of GLVL ribs in beech, which collaborate with panels of the same material. The latter allows achieving excellent strength with reduced weight. We are talking about a characteristic bending strength of 75 MPa, whereas conventionally used softwood these days reaches 24 MPa. The supporting beams are also made of GLVL. The walls of the extension are made of a more traditional timber frame.
