Linkeroever’s Park & Ride building is part of a plan by the city of Antwerp to improve the sustainability of mobility between the city and its region. The appearance of the 4 planned parking buildings is identical, making them easily recognizable on the main access roads to the city. The Linkeroever parking building has 5 floors and can accommodate 1,500 cars (150 with an electronic charging station), 15 shared cars, 150 bicycles and 30 shared bicycles. It is located next to a direct streetcar line to the city center. This project is part of the large infrastructure project ‘Oosterweel-connection’.
The building is an open construction without facades, where the large spans of the concrete slabs are supported by glued laminated wood beams. To limit the bearing pressure and structural height of the wooden beams, the slab is monolithically connected to the concrete columns. The combination of the two materials is made possible by the creation of sliding supports between the slabs and beams in order to account for expansion differences. Each floor is also divided into 6 different “compartments” with mutual expansion joints. These sections can be erected completely independently, and each has its own circulation core.
