The Dames Blanches project is located in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, on the outskirts of Brussels. It includes more than 200 apartments spread across 8 different buildings. In addition to housing, the project features a childcare center, apartment blocks with parking, a home for the elderly, terraced houses, and a small community center. The selected proposal aims to make the future Dames Blanches neighborhood a model eco-district of the 21st century, emphasizing the reuse of existing resources, the careful choice of materials, and the partial use of bio- and geo-sourced materials. Most of the buildings will be constructed with wood (timber frame, post-beam, and CLT floors) to minimize construction time. It also incorporates a thorough reflection on the concept of a contemporary garden city to ensure quality integration into the urban environment. Life in this new neighborhood is intended to be individual, family-oriented, and ecological.
The entire structure has been designed to be as economical and ecological as possible. The spans are minimized to limit the amount of materials used. Additionally, the number of floors is limited to three, allowing the use of shallow foundations, which further reduces environmental impact and costs. Concrete is only used for the infrastructure, while the entire superstructure is made of wood, thus promoting the use of renewable materials and a lower carbon footprint.
