On the occasion of the 10th edition of the “Forum International Bois Construction” in Paris, the ephemeral auditorium stands in the center of the Grand Palais. A total amount of 64 CLT panels are bended and assembled together to create the plenary room for conferences. This temporary structure is easily dismantled and is intended to be reused for other events.
CLT bending is based on the lattice hinge process that was developed on a large scale for this project : a series of longitudinal cuts sawn by a CNC machine. In addition to reducing the overall stiffness of the panel, these thin strips also give a slight transparency and good acoustic quality to the structure. The curvature of the panels is maintained by a post-tensioning system developed specifically for the project. Custom-made cast iron pieces are inserted into the slots and tensioned by a steel rod at each end. All these parts can be disassembled to put the panels back flat and facilitate transportation.
