Reinforced glulam beams with openings

Context

The research, carried out in collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Prof. Philipp Dietsch, aimed to verify the strength of 52x75h cm block glued glulam beams containing openings.

Particularities

The openings made in the beams meet the requirements of the future Eurocode 5, which is not yet official. This allowed the openings and their reinforcement to be checked in advance, but experimental tests were necessary to validate the design since the standard is not yet applicable. The span of the beams was 6.75 m and their section was 52x75h cm. Tests with and without screw reinforcement were performed. The rupture occurred as planned and the tests validated the original design without any adaptation.
