The Sint Benedictus project, in the heart of Mortsel, involves the development of a compact residential area with a park and public facilities on a former municipal site. The new residential area will include a mix of housing units, ranging from single-family homes and kangaroo houses to multi-generational housing. The buildings are located on the edge of the site to minimise the built footprint and provide a large park and community facilities. The new project is sustainable in the broadest sense of the term. On the one hand, because it will be built in a compact way, limiting the footprint and minimising the proportion dedicated to the car, and on the other hand, particular attention is paid to circular principles, sustainable materials and innovative techniques.
The architecture and structure have been designed together, using an integrated design approach. In this way, the grid, the spaces offered by the building and the characteristics of the architecture will be adapted to the timber structures. The search for the right balance between structural optimisation, generous architecture and a cost-effective project has been the guiding principle throughout this process. The performance of the structure delivers its beauty without artifice.
