This project is the outcome of a competition organized by the non-profit organization Emmaus. Situated in Mechelen as part of the new master plan for the General Hospital’s Roosendaelveld area, the project involves the construction of a new daycare center for 42 children, with the potential for expansion to accommodate 112.
The entire site is designed as a harmonious landscape park, contributing to a valuable reorganization. The daycare center, both in its form and material usage, presents itself as a cabin in the woods within Roosendaelveld Park. With its single-story structure, the building seamlessly integrates into the landscape, exuding an inviting and child-friendly atmosphere.
By unfolding the fifth facade—the roof—above the efficiently designed layout, the structure takes on a playful character. Plans include incorporating a green roof and solar panels on specific sections of the roof.
The roof structure is integrated into the roof’s timber-framed caissons eliminating the need for overhanging beams. The structure is completely prefabricated. The external columns are milled in a circular shape.
